BIO: Leala Smith
-I fell in love with synthesis 20 years ago by way of the Buchla 200 modular synthesizer at The Evergreen State College. I practically lived in the music technology labs, taking every opportunity to abscond with my new love—the synthesizer. Having always been a technologist and a musician in one form or another, the synthesizer unlocked a whole galaxy of sound making and musical composition to me that was a natural fit. I haven’t looked back.Â
I’m currently a Senior Technical Writer at a tech company, I write documentation for software developers, but I’ve also worked professionally as an audio engineer. I’ve taught workshops on audio production and synthesis at colleges and through Patchwerks in Seattle. I co-founded a collective called Signal Flow whose mission was to provide audio and media art workshops to women and non-binary folks. I’ve been involved in the synthesis community over the last two decades, and have curated synthesizer petting zoos, organized meetups, participated in forums, led synth DIY projects (aka soldering synth circuits), and more. In short, I’m cookoo for synthesis.
I was often the only woman in my audio classes in college, and when I worked in the audio field. I love how synthesis is more accessible than ever to people like me, but we still have a long ways to go. I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge of music technology—especially with women, queers, and marginalized folks. I invite you to come play with me in my Introduction to Synthesis workshop this July—hope to see you there!
Accesibility: there is a restroom available, but it is up a flight of stairs.
